Hello everyone, Skylar here! I am an English teacher at Ueno Gakuen.
On June 19th, our school participated in English Day for the junior high schoolers. This year's event was Rakugo, one in English and Japanese and another in all Japanese. Since this was my first time experiencing a Rakugo performance, it made it more meaningful for me to have made this memory with the JHS students. I was especially impressed by how fluid one of the performers switched between English and Japanese so effortlessly. What made it even more special for me was watching eight of the students bravely choose a script to perform. It made me smile when I heard giggles from the students as they watched their classmates and the performers. It was a nice reminder that any language is about human connection and focusing on the community rather than the individual experience. I look forward to Ueno Gakuen's English Day next year!
